Court Room Essay

People of the Jury, on the night of March 5th 1970, Officer Preston did not order the soldiers to fire at the crowd. That night, many children were taunting, name calling and assaulting soldiers. When they called for help, a soldier had hit a child with the butt of his gun in self defense. By the time Preston and other soldiers came to help control the crowd, it had grown several times in size and were even more furious. As Preston and other soldiers tried to control the crowd, they continued to assault and taunt the soldiers. A witness saw a one soldier get hit in the head with a stick and his gun accidentally went off. Once one gun went off, several others went off. By the time Preston had got the soldiers under control, five colonists had died.
People of the Jury, the crowd is to blame for the deaths if the five colonists. They are the ones who provoked the soldiers, daring them to fire. The first soldier who did fire, fired on accident because of a blow to the head from someone in the crowd. This is why the crowd is to blame for the deaths.
It is hard to punish a mob with such great number. Therefore there should only be a few who get punished. They should be picked at random and the selected few should be tared and feathered to show everyone that it is wrong to do such things. If we punish the crowd, then the crowd will obviously be unhappy but the king will be pleased to see the people brought to justice.
